The world

The Waverley is an independent hotel in the English city of Bellwether. Its sign still promises private dining rooms that disappeared decades ago, because replacing the sign has always been judged more expensive than explaining it. Staff, guests, suppliers, neighbours and relatives all have lives that begin at the Waverley and carry on far beyond it.

The engine

Not a “problem guest of the week” show: some guests appear once, others return and become friends, rivals, suppliers or family. The hotel is a doorway into a whole comic city.

Tone

The location comedy of Fawlty Towers without the cruelty, the ensemble warmth of Parks and Recreation, and the British everyday texture of Detectorists.

The cast

  • Maren Holloway — General Manager. Believes a precise enough procedure can tame any problem; her file “Unexpected Situations — Current” is never current.
  • Naveen Arora — Front desk. Solves anyone’s problem in minutes but can postpone one personal decision for months.
  • Celeste Monroe — Housekeeping. Distrusts the phrase “it’ll only take a minute.”
  • Fergus Pender — Maintenance. Repairs anything; his full report is “It works now.”
  • Saffron Keel — Events. Can reframe any disaster as a branding opportunity — except her own wedding.
  • Kwame Asante — Night manager. The most rational person in the building, so he explains irrational events at 3 a.m.
  • Marnie Harrow — Receptionist, 22. Follows language to its literal conclusion at the least convenient moment.
  • Gideon Cross — Chef. Treats breakfast as a matter of professional honour.
  • Lowell Finch — Owner. Discovers business concepts years late and announces them as innovations.

A possible season one

A suggested shape (8 × ~25 min, or 8 shorts); the final structure is the creator’s call.

  1. Five Stars. A review calls the Waverley “possibly the worst hotel in the world” — and gives it five stars.
  2. We Do Have Your Reservation. Three systems disagree about one booking. Marnie asks which one is the truth.
  3. Room 31. A guest is checked in to a room the floor plan does not show.
  4. Breakfast Is Included, Technically. “Eggs any style.” Gideon considers the phrase legally reckless.
  5. Night Shift. Kwame’s 3 a.m. guests, all perfectly logical to themselves.
  6. The Presidential Suite. Which president stayed here? Every staff member gives a different answer.
  7. Saffron Says Yes. Saffron runs a stranger’s wedding flawlessly and can’t choose a date for her own.
  8. Everyone Is Staying Another Night. The trains stop and the Waverley fills with people who never meant to stay.
